About the book

Cipriano Algor is a potter in his sixties who sells his pottery to a giant shopping and residential complex known as the Center. When the Center's buyer informs him that the sales will be reduced, and then ended, he has to reinvent his trade. His daughter Marta and her husband Marçal, a guard at the Center, are part of the dilemma, since the Center wants them to move in. A stray dog called Found joins the household. Saramago uses the setting to compare handmade work with mass production.

An approachable Saramago novel for those who want a story about work, family and a gradual shift in values. His style, with its lack of quotation marks, takes a little getting used to.
