Mia Winchell has synesthesia: she sees sounds as colours and letters carry colours too. At school she hides it after a humiliating incident in third grade, but as a teenager, keeping it secret feels heavy. Her old black cat Mango, her grandfather Fred and a counsellor are all part of her life, and the book follows her as she tries to find out whether other people share her condition, and whether telling the truth might bring relief.
Written for middle-grade and young teen readers, it shows how a rare neurological trait can feel for someone living with it. Anyone who has kept a secret about being different will recognise the feeling.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
