About the book

Told by Death, who is fascinated by the girl, this is the story of Liesel Meminger, a nine-year-old fostered in 1939 by Hans and Rosa Hubermann in a poor neighborhood of Molching. She steals books, beginning with one at her brother's grave, and learns to read from Hans. Rudy Steiner, her friend, wants a kiss and a gold medal, while the family risks everything by hiding Max Vandenburg. As the bombing starts, Liesel's words become a refuge.

A good fit for readers who enjoy historical fiction with a distinctive narrator. It leaves a memory of small, human acts of courage in the middle of war.
