Louisa Morgan follows three women from one family of witches over several centuries. In seventeenth-century England, Annis Whitehead has to learn to use her inherited powers when a witch-hunt threatens her family, and the book passes the gift, and the burden, to her descendants, including a woman in Victorian London and another in the early twentieth century. Each faces a different threat and has to decide how to use her magic. The story focuses on bonds between mothers, daughters and granddaughters, and on the cost of power.
