A Vegetariana

About the book

Han Kang's novel follows Yeong-hye, a quiet South Korean woman who one day announces that she will no longer eat meat, after a nightmare she refuses to describe. Her husband is embarrassed, her father tries to force-feed her at a family dinner, and her body becomes the battleground for everyone's expectations. The book is built in three parts, narrated by her husband, her brother-in-law (a video artist) and her sister In-hye, never by Yeong-hye herself.

Brief, intense fiction about the limits of obedience makes this worth an afternoon. Afterward you will probably be left with questions rather than answers about her choice and about those who judge it.

Reading profile

Deep, inward-looking, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.

Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
