About the book

Anya Borzakovskaya is a self-conscious high schooler struggling to fit in while distancing herself from her Russian immigrant roots. Her life changes when she falls down a dry well and encounters the skeleton of Emily, a girl who died a century earlier. Emily’s ghost hitches a ride out of the hole by clinging to a finger bone Anya pockets. Initially, the ghost acts as a supernatural ally, helping Anya cheat on exams, navigate social ladders, and pursue a popular crush. However, the spirit’s helpfulness masks an obsessive, lethal past, forcing Anya to confront the reality that her ghostly confidante is a dangerous predator who refuses to move on.

The book targets teenage readers and adults interested in the intersection of dark fantasy and coming-of-age realism. It appeals to those who enjoy stories about the friction between cultural identity and the desire for social status. Readers walk away with a cynical perspective on the cost of superficial popularity and the importance of self-acceptance. The narrative provides a cautionary look at how projecting one's insecurities onto others can lead to harmful dependencies, ultimately showing that ghosts of the past are often safer left buried.
