About the book

Ravic is a German surgeon who has fled the Nazis and lives illegally in Paris in 1938, operating for a famous doctor who takes credit for his work. He treats refugees and the poor, and is haunted by his torture in a concentration camp and by a desire for revenge against a Gestapo officer, Haake. He falls in love with Joan Madou, an Italian actress, and the relationship is set against the approach of war and the fate of the exiles in the city.

A classic of exile and love by Remarque, suited to readers who like historical fiction set in the Second World War period and the world of refugees.
