In the city of Córdoba, Argentina, a group of trans women, travestis, work at night in a park and live together in a boarding house. The narrator is Camila, who arrives from a small town to study and become herself. Camila Sosa Villada creates a gallery of strong characters, including the matriarch Tía Encarna, who adopts a baby found in the park, and the others who cook, quarrel and look after one another. They face violence and the police, and the story mixes dark scenes with magic and humour.
It is for readers who want a vivid, unapologetic story about chosen family and survival on the margins. It shows how love and solidarity can survive in hard places.
Deep, inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Mindful Reader. Which reader are you?
