Darren Vender is a nineteen-year-old Black Brooklyn kid with a dead-end job at Starbucks, until a chance meeting with Rhett, the leader of a mostly white sales team at a start-up called Sumwun. Rhett recruits him, and Darren becomes the firm's only Black salesman, quickly climbing by following the sales methods in the company's manual. Mateo Askaripour's satire follows Darren's rise, his compromises, the racial dynamics of the office and what he leaves behind in Bed-Stuy, and the book includes passages in the form of sales instructions.
Readers who like biting workplace satire will enjoy it, along with those curious about corporate America and race. It deals with ambition, code-switching and loyalty, and has a lot of humour and some real pain.
Balanced in tone; an easy read.
