Bone Gap is a small Illinois town where people sometimes vanish. When the beautiful Roza, a Polish immigrant who lives with brothers Finn and Sean O'Sullivan, disappears, Finn is the only witness and can describe her kidnapper only as a man he could not see clearly. Finn has trouble recognizing faces and people think he is odd or lying. Laura Ruby blends magical realism, a love story and a mystery, with a girl named Petey who raises bees and a landscape that feels almost alive. The book follows both Finn's search and Roza's captivity.
Teen readers who like fiction that mixes realism with fairy-tale strangeness will find this a distinctive read. It also considers how people judge by looks, and what it takes to see someone truly.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
