Maggie and Ira Moran, a married couple in their fifties in Baltimore, drive to the funeral of a friend's husband in Pennsylvania. On the way home, Maggie, a restless busybody, tries to interfere with the lives of others, and the day's events bring back memories of their courtship and of the choices they made. Along the way the pair stop to visit Maggie's son's estranged wife and their granddaughter, and the story shows how Maggie's attempts to fix things meet Ira's quiet resignation.
For readers who like gentle, observant stories about long marriages and small disappointments, it is a good choice. Tyler's humour keeps it light.
Inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
