Deepak Chopra retells the life of Siddhartha Gautama, from his sheltered childhood as a prince in a palace through his encounter with old age, sickness and death, his departure from home, years of ascetic practice and his awakening under the Bodhi tree. Chopra tells it as a novel, using imagined dialogue and scenes, and emphasises the idea that enlightenment comes from direct inner experience. The story ends with the Buddha's first teachings and the founding of his community.
It's for readers new to the story of the Buddha and those who prefer a narrative approach to philosophy. It is a smooth introduction, though not a scholarly biography.
Inward-looking and contemplative; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Escapist Adventurer. Which reader are you?
