A celebrated Viennese novelist, on his birthday, receives an unsigned letter from a woman he cannot recall. She writes that her child has died and that she is dying herself, and she wants to tell him what he never knew: she loved him since she was thirteen, when he moved into her building, and she watched him from a distance for years. They had a brief night together, and she became pregnant, never telling him. Stefan Zweig writes it as a single long monologue in her voice.
It is a short, effective novella for readers who like emotional stories about obsessive love. It also shows how well Zweig handles interior lives.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Mindful Reader. Which reader are you?
