About the book

Fourteen-year-old Will Tweedy lives in Cold Sassy, Georgia, in 1906, when his grandfather Rucker Blakeslee, a store owner, scandalizes the town. Three weeks after his wife's funeral, Rucker marries Miss Love Simpson, a young milliner from the North, who is thirty years his junior. Will narrates how the family and the community react to the marriage, from his Aunt Loma's outrage to the church gossip, while he comes to understand his grandfather's logic and his new step-grandmother. Olive Ann Burns fills the story with Southern humor and local detail, including the arrival of electricity and the first automobile.

It is a warm and funny pick for readers who like small-town historical fiction narrated by a coming-of-age voice.
