Édouard Louis writes about his mother, Monique, who was born into a poor family in northern France, had children young, and spent years in a violent marriage with a husband who drank. She later left her home and her life changed, and Louis shows the person she became, one far from what he'd known as a child. He tells her story in short sections, drawing on her own words and the ways she resisted social and personal limits. The book is a counterpart to his earlier memoir about his father.
Readers of French autofiction and of class-aware nonfiction will find a short, direct and affectionate tribute that doesn't hide the harm.
Deep and inward-looking; a moderate read.
