The narrator, a freelance writer in his mid-thirties, is haunted by a dream about the Dolphin Hotel in Sapporo, where he stayed years ago with a woman who later vanished. He goes back and finds a transformed building, and at the end of an elevator ride, he meets the Sheep Man, who tells him to keep dancing as long as the music plays. This sets him off on a trip through Tokyo and Hawaii, where he meets a lonely thirteen-year-old girl named Yuki, a former actor, Gotanda, and a call girl. Haruki Murakami continues the story of A Wild Sheep Chase, mixing a murder mystery with ghosts and consumer culture.
It suits readers who have enjoyed Murakami's earlier novels.
Deep, inward-looking, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
