Georg Büchner's 1835 play dramatizes the last days of Georges Danton during the French Revolution. Danton, tired and disillusioned, argues with the puritanical Robespierre over whether the Terror must continue. Danton is arrested, tried and sent to the guillotine, while the crowd shifts allegiance. Büchner takes much of the dialogue from historical sources.
It is a staple of German theatre and appeals to readers of political drama. The play questions whether revolutions devour their own and whether history follows any moral pattern, in language that remains startling.
Deep, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
