Claire Zachanassian, now one of the richest women in the world, returns to her impoverished hometown of Güllen with a proposition. She will give the town a billion in exchange for the killing of Alfred Ill, the shopkeeper who betrayed her when she was young. The townspeople reject it at first, but gradually begin to buy on credit, spend money they do not have, and find reasons why justice requires Ill's death.
This tragicomic play is for readers who like sharp satire of moral corruption and money, and it is short enough to read in an evening. It suits students and general readers who want a classic of post-war European theater.
Deep and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
