About the book

The Rainbow Fish is the most beautiful fish in the ocean, with shimmering scales of blue, green, purple and silver. The other fish admire him, but he is proud and refuses to share. When a little blue fish asks for one of his shiny scales, he refuses, and the other fish stop playing with him. Lonely, he asks the wise octopus for advice, and she tells him to give away his scales. He does, and finds that he is happy to be part of a group again, though he now has only one shiny scale. Marcus Pfister's picture book uses foil-stamped scales in the illustrations.

It suits small children and parents who want a gentle story about sharing and friendship. It makes a nice read-aloud for kindergarten.
