About the book

A married couple, both documentary artists, take their two children from New York across the American Southwest by car, heading toward Apacheria, the former homeland of the Apache. The father is recording sounds for a project, the mother is working on a piece about migrant children detained at the border, and the marriage is cracking. The kids, a boy and a girl, record their own impressions, and the children's reading of the world becomes part of the story. Valeria Luiselli builds the novel with maps, archives, boxes of recordings and references to other books.

Readers who like literary road novels about family, migration and the stories we pass on will find it rewarding.
