About the book

A woman in her forties, never named, goes to a hunting lodge in the Austrian Alps with her cousin and her husband. They leave for the village at night and do not come back. In the morning, she finds an invisible, impassable wall that seals off the valley, and on the other side everything seems frozen. She is left alone with a dog named Lynx, a cow, a cat and the forest, and she writes a report on how she survives over the next few years: hunting, farming, tending the animals and coming to terms with the silence. Marlen Haushofer's novel mixes survival tale with quiet meditation.

Readers who like solitary, reflective fiction will find a spare, strange story. It asks what remains of a person when society disappears.
