Gil, a quiet man in New York, abruptly quits his job and walks from the city to Arizona. He is going to live near his friends Sophie and Wayne, in a glass house in the desert, where he makes new relationships. Lydia Millet writes with calm humour about the people he meets, including a group of neighbours, and about birds, which are literally dinosaurs. The novel looks at wealth, environmental loss and how to live decently when the world is in decline.
It will suit readers who like quiet, wry novels with an ecological conscience. If you are weary of dramatic plots and prefer small acts of kindness, this short book offers that.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
