John Berendt arrives in Savannah, Georgia, in the 1980s and gets to know a cast of local figures, including Jim Williams, a wealthy antiques dealer, who is tried repeatedly for the shooting of a young man, Danny Hansford, in his mansion, Mercer House. Other characters include the Lady Chablis, a drag performer, a lawyer called Sonny Seiler, and an inventor who threatens to poison the city's water. Berendt writes in a nonfiction style with the pace of a novel, mixing court scenes with portraits of the town's society.
Readers who like true crime told through character and place will enjoy it. It's a good book for those curious about Southern society and its eccentrics.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
