About the book

Xochi is a cuentista, a sanctioned storyteller tasked with wandering the arid landscape to consume the secrets and sins of her neighbors. After she listens to a confession, she releases the memory into the desert sands, where it is supposed to vanish forever. However, the stories do not disappear; they transform into physical monsters that haunt the dunes. When Xochi encounters Elodio, a boy with a past linked to her own, she stops burying the truths of her village and begins a trek across the wasteland to confront the deity responsible for her burden.

Readers who value mythology rooted in Latinx folklore and stories about the weight of community secrets will find this narrative useful. It appeals to young adults who are interested in how individual guilt impacts a collective society. The audience learns that silence can be as destructive as the truth it hides. By the final page, a reader understands the necessity of personal agency when navigatinginherited religious traditions and the difficulty of defining one's identity apart from a prescribed social role.
