Siri and Vivenna are sisters, princesses of the small kingdom of Idris, and their father is forced by treaty to send one of them to marry the God King of neighbouring Hallandren. Siri goes in place of her older sister and discovers a court of living gods sustained by a colour-giving magic called BioChromatic Breath, while Vivenna follows to save her. Meanwhile the god Lightsong and a mysterious man, Vasher, who carries a sentient sword named Nightblood, uncover a plot. Brandon Sanderson builds a self-contained fantasy novel around a magic system based on colour and life force.
A good standalone for epic fantasy fans who want a complete story in one volume. It is inventive and surprising.
Outward-looking and escapist; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Curious Generalist. Which reader are you?
