El mundo sumergido

About the book

In a near future, solar radiation has melted the polar caps and flooded the world's cities into tropical lagoons. Dr Robert Kerans, a biologist, takes part in a scientific survey of the drowned London, where heat and rising silt create a primeval environment. As the survey continues, he and a few others, including Beatrice Dahl and the colonel, begin to experience strange dreams that call them back to a prehistoric past. A rival, the pirate Strangman, arrives to loot the city. J.G. Ballard's 1962 novel favours atmosphere and psychology over action.

Science fiction readers interested in climate catastrophe stories, and fans of Ballard's other disaster novels, will find a haunting, slow, beautifully described book. It is also a good starting point for his work.
