About the book

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille arrives in the world in a stinking Paris fish market in 1738, and grows into a young man with a gift: he can smell everything, but he has no personal odor, and no one notices him. He joins the perfumer Baldini's shop, studies the art of blending, and later goes to Grasse, where he learns about enfleurage and becomes obsessed with the smell of a girl he met in Paris. Süskind creates a novel in which smells, not looks or sounds, tell the story, and where a killer is also a creator.

For readers who like historical fiction with literary craft and a disturbing hero. The book ends with a scene people discuss for years.
