About the book

Saramago's novel is based on a true event. In 1551 King João III of Portugal gives his cousin, the Archduke Maximilian of Austria, an Asian elephant named Solomon as a wedding gift. The animal and his Indian keeper, Subhro, begin a long walk from Lisbon to Vienna through Spain, Italy, and across the Alps, meeting soldiers, priests, and curious crowds. Saramago narrates with irony, long sentences, and frequent digressions on power, religion, and vanity.

Anyone who likes historical fiction with humour, or who has enjoyed Saramago's other satires, will find a short, light-hearted entry to his work. It also suits readers who just want a good story about an unlikely road trip across sixteenth-century Europe.
