About the book

In 1986 Omaha, sixteen-year-old Eleanor, new to school with wild red hair and odd clothes, is mocked on the bus until Park, a quiet half-Korean boy, makes room for her. They start sharing comics and mixtapes without speaking, and then talk and hold hands. Her home life is dangerous: a stepfather, Richie, who threatens her family and forces her to sleep in a cramped room with her siblings. Park's loving but different family complicates things too, and the two must decide how far they will go for each other.

Readers who like young-adult romances with period detail and music references will find this one tender and painful. It captures the intensity of a first love and its limits.
