Khosrou, called Daniel, is a twelve-year-old Iranian refugee living in a small town in Oklahoma. He is bullied at school and tells his classmates stories about his past in Iran, in the style of the Arabian Nights, with stories of ancestors, kings, battles and his mother's escape. Daniel Nayeri draws on his own childhood. He moves from tale to tale, jumping in time between the fables of his Persian family and the reality of a child in a new country, with a Christian convert mother and a mean stepfather.
