Tomoka Mizuno, a department-store clerk in Tokyo, wants a job that suits her. She goes to a community center library and meets Sayuri Komachi, a large, unreadable librarian who asks one question: what are you looking for? Komachi pulls several titles from the shelf and then adds a bonus: a small needle-felted object. In each of five chapters, a different person, such as a young man at a furniture company or a retiree, receives a recommendation that changes how they see their work and their life. Michiko Aoyama links them in a way that rewards reading in order.
This is a gentle, comforting book for those who like stories about bookshops and the power of a well-chosen title.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
