The Marquis of Alverstoke, a wealthy, bored London bachelor, is approached by a distant cousin, Frederica Merriville, who asks for help in launching her beautiful younger sister Charis into society. She has her reasons: she is the one who looks after the family, including two lively young brothers, and has no interest in her own prospects. Alverstoke agrees, partly out of boredom, and is drawn into the family's troubles, from escaped balloon flights to a pet dog. Georgette Heyer's Regency romance is full of wit, with sharp dialogue and a lot of period detail.
Readers who like humorous Regency romances with a slow-building attachment will find a delightful, lighthearted book.
Practical, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
