Casey Han, a Korean-American woman from Queens, graduates from Princeton in 1990 and tries to establish herself in New York. Her parents expect her to marry and settle, but Casey wants money, status and a job that fits her expensive taste. She makes mistakes with relationships, gambling and work. The novel also follows her friends, her parents' church community and the pressures of immigrant family life.
It is a long, character-rich novel for readers who like social realism with a large cast. It suits those who enjoy stories of immigrant ambition and flawed protagonists, and who liked Min Jin Lee's Pachinko.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
