Jeffrey Eugenides collected stories from different parts of his career. They include "Baster," about a woman who chooses an insemination donor and a friend who has surprising reactions, and "Timeshare," about a family vacation affected by financial trouble. The stories cover marriages, immigrants, and middle-aged people who feel their lives have drifted. His style mixes comedy with attention to the awkward details of daily life.
Readers who liked The Virgin Suicides or Middlesex will find shorter work with the same wry voice. The collection suits anyone who prefers to read fiction in single sittings.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
