About the book

In the cocoa-growing town of Ilhéus, Bahia, in 1925, the bar owner Nacib Saad Arab loses his cook just as he has guests to feed. He hires Gabriela, a migrant from the drought-stricken interior who turns out to cook marvelously, and the two begin a relationship. Around them the town is changing: cocoa planters, colonels like Ramiro Bastos, and modernizers are fighting over politics, honor and the arrival of roads and a port. Gabriela herself cannot be tamed by marriage or convention.

Readers who like warm, sensual Latin American fiction, with humor and a strong sense of place, will enjoy it. It also reads as a portrait of social change in Brazil's northeast, told through food, gossip and desire.
