Gandhi wrote these memoirs in installments for his weekly journal, covering his life until 1921. He begins with childhood and an early marriage, then his legal studies in London, where he took up vegetarianism seriously, followed by twenty years in South Africa where he organized resistance to racial laws. Back in India, he describes his early campaigns on behalf of indigo farmers and mill workers. He considers each period as a lesson in truth, and he reflects on diet, chastity, religion, and nonviolence.
It is an excellent fit for readers of political and spiritual autobiography. You see Gandhi as a person who made mistakes and corrected them, not as a statue.
Inward-looking and contemplative; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
