About the book

Ben is eleven, bored and stuck every Friday night at his grandmother's house, where he has to play Scrabble and eat cabbage soup. Then he discovers that his dull, slipper-wearing granny has a secret: she was once an international jewel thief. Together they plan to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. David Walliams fills the story with fart jokes, grandmother-grandson banter and illustrations by Tony Ross, and he builds toward an emotional center about loneliness and the stories older people carry.

Children around eight to twelve will enjoy the comedy and the heist, and parents reading aloud will find it a warm story about grandparents. It is a good first Walliams for reluctant readers who want a quick, silly adventure with some heart.
