Jule West is a young woman with a gift for becoming other people. At the start of E. Lockhart's thriller, she appears at a luxury resort, rebuilds herself, and the story runs in reverse, scene by scene, from the end back toward the beginning. Along the way it reveals her friendship with the wealthy Imogen Sokolov, a missing girl, and a trail of identities, lies and violence that lead across two continents. Told in short, clipped chapters, it plays with who gets to be the victim and who the predator.
Fans of young adult suspense that rewards close reading will enjoy working out how the pieces connect. Because the plot moves backward, the pleasure is in noticing details you missed, and in trying to decide how much sympathy a narrator deserves when she is hard to trust.
