गचर-घोचर is the story of a young man in Bangalore who describes how his family has moved from cramped, difficult circumstances to prosperity, thanks to his uncle's spice business. As money arrives, small shifts occur in each member's behavior: his father's role shrinks, his mother and aunt grow more guarded, and his sister's marriage falls apart. The title, an invented phrase for something hopelessly tangled, describes the web of selfish choices that holds the household together. The ending is sudden and chilling.
Readers who want a quick but memorable novel about middle-class ambition in modern India will find it suitable. It is also an easy choice for book groups, because there is much to say about the final scenes in only about a hundred pages.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; an easy read.
