Ramón Budiño, a Uruguayan businessman, lives in the shadow of his father Edmundo, a wealthy and corrupt man who made his fortune in a society that Ramón despises. Mario Benedetti's novel follows Ramón's attempts to break free of his father's influence and to find a purpose, and examines moral compromise, family and the generation gap in Latin America of the 1960s.
It suits readers of Uruguayan and Latin American fiction who like novels about politics and conscience. The reader gets a clear picture of a country in transition and a son who has to choose.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
