Anders and Cecilia lose their young daughter Maja when she vanishes during a family outing to the island of Domarö, in the Swedish archipelago. Two years later, Anders returns to the island after the breakdown of his marriage, hoping to find out what happened. He discovers that the community has secrets and that the sea may hold a connection to local legends. John Ajvide Lindqvist, author of Let the Right One In, blends grief and the supernatural, as Anders's search brings him into contact with the islanders and with forces linked to a long-ago ritual.
It is for horror readers who prefer slow-building dread and an emotional core. The book suits fans of Scandinavian fiction who like their chills combined with a story about loss.
Escapist; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Curious Generalist. Which reader are you?
