Laura and Kit are a couple who spend their holidays chasing solar eclipses. At the 1999 total eclipse in Cornwall, Laura sees a man attack a woman in a field and, urged by Kit, reports it. Their testimony convicts Jonah Ismay, and fifteen years later, as the couple prepare for another eclipse and a child, the past returns when Jonah is released, and Laura starts to doubt what she saw and what Kit has told her.
A psychological thriller for readers who like unreliable memories, marriages under strain and a slow reveal of what each person is hiding. The eclipse-chasing frame gives it a pleasing sense of structure.
