A Black writer, whose name we never learn, is on a book tour for his novel, and the story follows him as he travels and tries to carry on while his mind seems to drift. In another strand, a Black boy named Soot lives in a world where he is hunted. The narrator's own life story runs alongside, filled with the shadow of Black people killed by police. Jason Mott writes with humor and a sense of the surreal about fame, grief, mental health and how a country views Black bodies.
It is for readers who like inventive literary fiction with a social conscience. Expect a tender, sad and sometimes funny book that does not go in a straight line.
Deep, inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
