A plane carrying British schoolboys crashes on an uninhabited Pacific island during a war. Ralph, elected leader by his peers, uses a conch shell to call meetings, and with the clever but mocked Piggy he tries to keep a signal fire going. Jack, who leads the choirboys turned hunters, prefers the thrill of the hunt, and soon a rumored beast in the forest feeds their fear. As discipline breaks down, the boys turn on Simon and Piggy.
Anyone interested in a bleak study of human nature and of how fast order collapses should read it. You close the book with a dark thought experiment about civilization that still gets argued in classrooms.
Deep, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
