Pablos, the son of a barber who steals and a mother who is rumored to be a witch, sets out to rise in the world. He serves as a companion to a nobleman's son at a school run by a miserly master, goes to university in Alcalá, then moves to Madrid and Seville, where he falls in with beggars, swindlers and actors. Each attempt to climb the social ladder ends in disgrace. Quevedo's satire of the picaresque tradition is told with wordplay and savage humor.
Readers of Spanish Golden Age literature will find it a classic. It is bleak, fast and sharply funny about ambition and class.
Outward-looking; a moderate read.
