About the book

While building a sandcastle at North Beach, young Jeremy Jacob is recruited by Captain Braid Beard and his vocal crew to help them bury a chest of treasure. Jeremy joins the pirates on their ship, the Jolly Roger, where he learns how to speak like a sailor, swap his manners for rowdy table habits, and avoid his vegetable-heavy diet. Throughout the day, he learns the mechanics of pirate life, from hoisting sails to the lack of a formal bedtime. However, the realization that pirates do not tuck their young mates in or read bedtime stories causes Jeremy to reconsider his new vocation as he guides the crew to bury their gold in his own backyard.

This picture book is for preschool and elementary-aged children who enjoy high-energy adventure and roleplay. Readers use this story to compare the rigid structures of household rules with the total independence of a pirate’s life. Children walk away with a specific vocabulary for pirate banter and a sense that while making a mess is fun, the comforts of home routines have their own value. Parents read it aloud to engage with the rhythm of the dialogue and the detailed, colorful illustrations of shipboard life.
