Jeremiah is a Black teenager from a family of Harlem, a talented basketball player, and Ellie is a white Jewish girl who attends the same private school in New York. They fall in love, and their relationship is tested by prejudice and the reactions of their families and friends. The story alternates between their views, and shows how the two of them try to find a place to be together. Their parents have differing ideas about whom they should see.
Jacqueline Woodson writes in spare, lyrical prose. It suits young adult readers who like love stories that deal with race, and a short novel that is better read with some preparation for its sad ending.
Inward-looking; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
