Agilulf is a knight in Charlemagne's army who does not exist: his white armor is empty and he is held together by willpower and faith. Italo Calvino tells this short fable with a lively cast, including Rambaldo, a young soldier looking for revenge, Bradamante, a warrior woman who falls in love with Agilulf, and Gurdulù, a squire who has no sense of himself and imitates everything he sees. The narrator is a nun who is writing the story, and the book moves from battle to love to a search for a lost honor, with humor and invention.
It suits readers who like fables and playful fiction. It's one of the three novels in Calvino's trilogy Our Ancestors, though it can be read alone.
Deep and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
