About the book

Josef K., a senior bank clerk, is informed by two strangers that he is under arrest. They never state a crime, and he is neither jailed nor cleared. As he is drawn into the machinery of an unseen Court, he consults an uncle, a lawyer named Huld, and the painter Titorelli, and hears a priest's parable of a man waiting at a door of the law. Kafka's unfinished novel was published after his death against his instructions, by his friend Max Brod.

A short, unsettling book about power and guilt, it keeps its strangeness on every reread.
