In the Arizona Territory in 1893, two stories run in parallel. Nora Lark, a frontierswoman, waits for her husband and sons, who have not returned, while a drought threatens her homestead and a stranger sits in her kitchen. Lurie, an outlaw, is on the run, hallucinating the voices of the dead and traveling with a camel, as part of the real-life Camel Corps experiment of the U.S. Army. Téa Obreht gradually brings the two stories together.
Readers who like Westerns that avoid the usual formulas, and who enjoy historical fiction with a touch of the uncanny, will find a quiet, strange and lyrical novel.
Deep; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
